How It Works

The Measurement Process

- Calculation: The system calculates the distance based on the time elapsed between emission and detection using the formula:

Creating the Point Cloud
A single laser pulse provides one data point. However, robotic Lidar sensors fire hundreds of thousands of pulses per second while often rotating or scanning across a field of view. The aggregation of these millions of measurements creates a 3D Point Cloud—a dense geometric representation of the robot's surroundings. Software algorithms then parse this cloud to distinguish between drivable surfaces and obstacles.
